Why We Invested in Katalyst Space: The New In-Orbit Servicing Economy

What if satellites could be upgraded… in space? For decades, satellites have been treated as static assets: designs locked in years before launch, operated until they run out of fuel or fall out of orbit, and then replaced with an entirely new spacecraft. That model is becoming increasingly strained as space grows more congested, contested, and strategically important. A satellite that cannot be upgraded, repositioned, or protected is now a liability.
Katalyst Space is engineering for a future where satellites are dynamic assets rather than disposable ones. The company is developing a fleet of autonomous robotic spacecraft capable of docking with and servicing assets in orbit. Its core platform, NEXUS, performs life extension and deploys modular upgrades to enable space domain awareness. Katalyst’s SIGHT payload functions like a security camera for space, while SHIELD adds deployable scouting units. Together with its ARC and ICON software, Katalyst is building the integrated infrastructure layer for the emerging space upgrade economy.
What stood out to us was the pace at which the team has turned technically difficult concepts into operational reality. Katalyst has already established flight heritage and was selected by NASA to rescue the $500M Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a first-of-its-kind mission requiring the company to rendezvous with, capture, and maneuver an unprepared spacecraft. If successful, the mission will establish Katalyst as one of the few companies in the world capable of executing robotic space upgrade operations at this level, and they will have done so in an amazingly short period of nine months from contract signing to launch.
This is the team built for the mission. CEO Ghonhee Lee brings guidance, navigation, and control experience from Raytheon. CTO Gavin Petit spent more than a decade at SpaceX working on Falcon 9 and Starship systems before joining Katalyst through the acquisition of Atomos Space. The broader team brings deep expertise across spacecraft systems and robotics.
